Join us for the Katie Gray Weekend

The 48th Katie Gray Race from Belleville to Picton will take place on Saturday, September 3rd, 2016. This race has taken place every Labour Day since 1968. It has survived hurricanes, doldrums, disappearing race committees and a misguided attempt to run it in reverse. More than 1500 boats have participated. The 50th Annual Katie Gray Race will take place in 2018 and our goal is to have at least 50 boats on the starting line for the 50th race. To get there we are trying to get sailors in the habit now of putting aside Labour Day weekend for the Katie Gray. And to do that we’re organizing a weekend full of events that promise fun and excitement for everyone.

We’ll start off with the Welcoming BBQ on Friday night hosted by Kim Wilkes (BQYC) and Muren Pickering (PEYC). Katie Gray racers and BQYC members will together enjoy a fun evening with live music featuring John Coull and the PEYC Blues Band.  Free dockage will be provided to all Katie Gray racers and a full, hot breakfast will be available to all racers starting at 0800 hrs on Saturday morning.

The race will start at 1000 hrs and, thanks to a series of potential finish lines, all boats should be finished and tied up at their free berth at  PEYC by 1800 hrs. The Prizegiving Dinner will begin at 1900 hrs and will be followed by live music from The Decades Band.

In order to encourage participation from as many neighbouring clubs as possible, we’re establishing a new trophy which will be awarded to the best four-boat team from any one club that posts the best results, in either the spinnaker or white sail divisions.

On Sunday morning, after breakfast at any one of many restaurants within walking distance of PEYC, the Binnacle Trophy Race will start at 1000 hrs and finish no later than 1800 hrs at BQYC. All are welcome to participate. The bar at BQYC will be open when the fleet arrives.

It sounds like an exciting weekend and we hope you’ll join us. And you don’t have to be an avid racer to sail in the Katie Gray. Anyone who owns a boat and would  enjoy a pleasant sail to Picton is welcome to participate. We’ll give you a one-time only handicap and you’ll get to enjoy all the social events. Everyone is welcome.

To enter, or for more information, visit the racing section of bqyc.ca or phone / e-mail Andy Thomson at 613 966 5864 / captainandy46@gmail.com. We hope to see you all on the starting line on September 3rd and especially in 2018 for the 50th Anniversary.
